Opioids
attach to proteins called opioid receptors on nerve cells in the brain, spinal
cord, gut, and other parts of the body. When this happens, the opioids block
pain messages sent from the body through the spinal cord to the brain. While
they can effectively relieve pain, opioids carry some risks and can be highly
addictive. The risk of addiction is especially high when opioids are used to
manage chronic pain over a long period of time.

I have never said that smoking cigarette was a good thing. They have labeled "smoking" like a disease of mankind with all stuff like "no smoking in public areas", "second hand smoke", "lung and other types of cancer", "education at school about this addicted habit", etc.
However they legalized marijuana or opioid. This stuff is healthy, safe, and not addicted?
"Don't drink and drive" is about do not "consume liquor, beer, wine, or alcohol" and drive a car. They have equipment to test the level of alcohol in drivers. Why didn't they have similar one for opioid or marijuana?
They complained that cigarette smokers have created burden in hospital or healthcare budgets. However opioid and marijuana "must" have both negative effects and aspects of cigarettes and alcohol. How about statistics from Police about criminal activities originated from opioid or marijuana users?
Perhaps you may know this high profile person (Rob Ford, Mayor of Toronto), who damaged his reputation and high cost in his political life. He was under influence of marijuana (I think) in a leaked video to media. He used inappropriate languages when mentioning other high profile personnel. Perhaps those taped this conversation wanted something from Rob Ford, but didn't get it. One of best skills from politicians is "talking in public", "walking around controversial issues", "avoiding problems", etc. However Rob Ford lost this skill due to marijuana.
